A Luxury Hotel With Kids… It’s Possible

Everyone loves the feeling of walking into a hotel that oozes luxury.  What we don’t love, is feeling uncomfortable because we’re not sure if we’re welcome with our tiny travelers in tow.

I’ve recently found out that you don’t have to sacrifice luxury just because your kids are traveling with you.  There are plenty of amazing high end hotels that not only allow kids, but welcome them!

We spent 4 glorious nights at Intercontinental Hotel in Hong Kong and we knew it was going to be amazing as soon as we pulled up.  Between the fountain out front and the doormen awaiting our arrival, we felt special before we even got out of the taxi.

Talk about a crib with a view!

The first impression of our room was that it was amazing!  Obviously.  But this couldn’t be confirmed until I checked the bed and the bathroom.  I love a giant tub to relax in after a long day of sightseeing and I was not disappointed when I walked into this bathroom!  The tub was HUGE!  It didn’t take long before I hopped in, turned the jets on and was completely relaxed; until two toddlers decided to jump in and splash around in my sanctuary.  Luckily there was plenty of room for all of us.

The beds also got our stamp of approval.  When you’re a Mom and you only get a few hours of sleep at a time, you want those hours to be amazing.  I was in heaven when I flopped back onto this bed.  Followed of course, by the bounce test from my daughters.

The Kids

Our girls loved that as soon as we walked into our room they saw their new stuffed animal friends waiting for them.  It was a really sweet way to make them feel at home and also a nice souvenir of our trip for them to bring home with them.IMG_7928Our youngest daughter got a welcome package in her crib, which is very convenient in case you may have forgotten any of your baby needs.

IMG_2287The Harbourside restaurant offered all day dining, making it easy for us to eat at anytime, and our girls were wild about the fact that their food came on a smoking train! The restaurant had a kid’s menu and colouring books, was never short on high chairs, and they brought out plastic tableware for the kids.  If that’s not family friendly, I don’t know what is!IMG_2375IMG_2369My Husband

My husband loves being near the ocean.  Partly because he grew up with it in his backyard and partly because he has a strange fascination with harbours and boats.  Seriously; once as a family we had to do a boat tour of the harbour in Hamburg,Germany so we could learn about their container shipping.  But I digress.  With the view we had from our suite, he could have sat by the window and watched the action on the water all day long…if there weren’t diapers to change.FullSizeRender(2)He also took advantage of the 24 hour gym that was just a quick elevator ride from our room.  IMG_8083IMG_8082My Favourites

Salvadore Ferragamo bath products.  Need I say more??  I may not be able to afford the handbag, but I sure did enjoy these little bottles of hapiness.

IMG_2291At home I lose track of how many times I hear the word “Mom” in a day.  Like all Moms with young kids, I’m always on duty.  I cook for my kids, clean up after them, change diapers, do laundry, wipe up spills, sweep food from under high chairs; you name it, it’s in my daily job description.  It was surreal to know that from the comfort of my hotel room, should I have needed anything at all, there was a button on the wall to press and a butler would come and bring us anything we needed.  Anything at all.  Is there anything more luxurious than that?IMG_2570While we’re talking about being spoiled; there’s no cooking on this vacation because 3 of the 5 restaurants in the hotel have a Michelin star.  But if you’d rather just stay in your room and relax, there’s room service with food that your kids will actually eat: complete with the smoking train.  And what might be the best part; when you’re done, you get to use the butler button for him to come and wheel away your white linen table.  If only that magic trick worked at home.IMG_2439Of course no luxury hotel would be complete without a spa.  I most definitely took a trip to the iSpa, but it was so good that I’ll save that for a story of its own!IMG_8084Don’t miss out on what just might be the prettiest ‘snack’ you’ve ever had!  Afternoon tea in the Lobby Lounge is a must.  This is tea for one person, so bring your appetite!IMG_2351The Whole Family

We have kids, and kids make messes.  It’s unavoidable and it happens quickly.  Even though our hotel room was cleaned daily, it seemed like the tidiness was quickly undone almost immediately after we walked in the door.  That’s why we loved evening turn-down service.  They gave the room a second tidy and checked if we needed clean towels or ice for the mini bar.  My daughters were excited because they thought a book was left for us, but when they opened the ‘book’ it was even better than they expected.  It was chocolate!  The best bedtime story we’ve ever read!IMG_7933IMG_7932Lastly, like most kids, ours LOVE a trip to the pool.  So everyone was pleased when we arrived at this one.  The kids got to swim as much as they wanted and we got to soak up the view from the infinity pools.  This was the life.IMG_8079To say we loved this hotel would be an understatement.  I could have sent for our things and moved right in, but I don’t think that was an option.  Next time you’re looking for a place to stay on your vacation, don’t be so quick to shy away from luxury hotels just because you’re traveling as a family.  They just might be a lot more kid-friendly than you’d think!

Thank you to Intercontinental Hong Kong for welcoming us as guests, and making us feel like royalty.  All opinions are my own.
